چکیده

Transient X-ray emission, with an approximate t−0.7 decay, was observed from SGR 1900+14 over 40 days following the the giant flare of 27 Aug 1998. We calculate in detail the diffusion of heat to the surface of a neutron star through an intense 1014 − 1015 G magnetic field, following the release of magnetic energy in its outer layers. We show that the power law index, the fraction of burst energy in the afterglow, and the return to persistent emission can all be understood if the star is composed of normal baryonic material. Heating and cooling of magnetars with accreted envelopes

We study the thermal structure and evolution of magnetars as cooling neutron stars with a phenomenological heat source in an internal layer. We focus on the effect of magnetized (B 1014 G) non-accreted and accreted outermost envelopes composed of different elements, from iron to hydrogen or helium. We discuss a combined effect of thermal conduction and neutrino emission in the outer neutron sta...

Assessing Millisecond Proto-magnetars as Grb Central Engines

Magnetars are a sizable subclass of the neutron star census. Their very high magnetic field strengths are thought to be a consequence of rapid (millisecond) rotation at birth in a successful core-collapse supernova. In their first tens of seconds of existence, magnetars transition from hot, extended “proto-”magnetars to the cooled and magnetically-dominated objects we identify ∼ 10 years later ...

Magnetars as cooling neutron stars with internal heating

We study thermal structure and evolution of magnetars as cooling neutron stars with a phenomenological heat source in a spherical internal layer. We explore the location of this layer as well as the heating rate that could explain high observable thermal luminosities of magnetars and would be consistent with the energy budget of neutron stars. We conclude that the heat source should be located ...

How Common Are Magnetars? The Consequences of Magnetic-Field Decay

Ultramagnetized neutron stars or magnetars have been invoked to explain several astrophysical phenomena. We examine how the magnetic field of a magnetar will decay over time and how this decay affects the cooling of the object. We find that for sufficiently strong nascent fields, field decay alters the cooling evolution significantly relative to similarly magnetized neutron stars with constant ...

Cooling of magnetars with internal layer heating

We model thermal evolution of magnetars with a phenomenological heat source in a spherical internal layer and compare the results with observations of persistent thermal radiation from magnetars. We show that the heat source should be located in the outer magnetar’s crust, at densities ρ 5 × 1011 g cm−3, and the heating rate should be ∼ 1020 erg cm−3 s−1. Heating deeper layers is extremely inef...
